School forms a large part of a child's life and reintegration after treatment is an important part of the normalisation process. With advances in treatment, more children with cancer are now able to return to school after the initial phase of intensive treatment and hospitalisation.
Although school re-entry is generally a happy event for the child and the family, it is often a difficult time of adjustment. Problems that are likely to be encountered during school reintegration include: academic lags, separation anxiety and school phobias, psychological problems, behavioural problems, rejection or social isolation of the child by peers, and physical problems of tiredness or difficulties in getting around.
