CCF Tribute Issue 2 2016 - page 1

For the fifth consecutive year, the Hair for Hope
(HfH) satellite event was held at Kong Meng San
Phor KarkSeeMonastery (KMSPKS). Exemplifying
the Buddhist philosophy of benevolence and
compassion, 351 participants, comprisingKMSPKS
staff, volunteers, devotees and Buddhist patrons
shaved their heads to raise awareness of childhood
cancer inSingapore.
Among the shavees was 36-year-old Business
Continuity Manager, Sai Tu Woei, who shaved
for the fourth time to fulfill the wishes of his
late younger brother, Sai Tu Jian. Tu Jian was
diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML)
in 2011 and suffered a relapse in 2012 after two
bone marrow transplants. To show gratitude for
the support he received from his family and friends
duringhis cancer journey and to support the young
cancer patients, Tu Jian participated in HfH 2012
and raised more than $12,000 for CCF. Tu Jian’s
wish was to participate in HfH 2013 again to raise
$10,000 for CCF but he succumbed to cancer
before he could participate in the event.
Determined to fulfill Tu Jian’s wish, Tu Woei
participated in HfH 2014 and 2015 and raised a
total of $8,480. To date, he has raised more than
$3,000 for HfH2016andachievedhis latebrother’s
fundraising target of $10,000.
Together with Tu Woei, 48-year-old Chong Hui
Kwee, third time shavee, and 65-year-old Doreen
Ho, first time shavee, alsowent bald at KMSPKS.
As a full-time caregiver for his 11-year-old
daughter, Joanna, who was diagnosed with High
Risk Medulloblastoma (common type of paediatric
malignant primarybrain tumour) in2014, Hui Kwee
shaved to tell other children that they are not
alone in the fight against cancer. Joanna, a CCF
beneficiary, is now aPrimary Four student.
Doreen lost her son to Leukaemia more than
30 years ago as she could not afford the hefty
medical bills for a bone marrow transplant. She
made a bald statement at HfH to raise funds for
children with cancer and their families so that
no child would be deprived of medical treatment
because of financial difficulties.
“Children’s Cancer Foundationwould like to extend
our heartfelt appreciation to the management, staff
and volunteers of Kong Meng San Phor Kark See
Monastery for their strong support in organising
Hair for Hope satellite event since 2012. We would
also like to thank the shavees, donorsand sponsors
for their generous giving in so many ways and
for standing in solidarity with children affected by
childhoodcancer.Together,wecancontinue tobuild
a community of support for our beneficiaries,” says
Neo LayTin, ExecutiveDirector of CCF.
CCF hopes to encourage at least 6,500
participants to shave at Hair for Hope 2016 and
