CCF Tribute Issue 2 2016 - page 3

The final shoot locationwas held at ChoaChu KangCemetery
Complex to represent the ‘exit’ of life. Thewalk in the cemetery
triggered emotional responses from participants, eliciting
thoughts on their views about death. Participants further
engaged in conversations on their chosen paths in life and how
theywould facedeathwhen it comes.Manyparticipants shared
that the visit to the cemetery was an intriguing experience and
the tour endedwith the realisation that death is not as daunting
aswhat most people have envisioned.
As photos reveal what is important to the photographer; a key
learning point for PhotoVoice workshop participants is the
search for meaning while reflecting on the things that matter
here-and-now. A big ‘Thank You’ to all our participants,
photography mentors and FujiFilm for the souvenirs
and cameras!
PhotoVoice
PhotoVoice is a photography workshop for CCF beneficiaries
between 13 and 25 years old to encourage expression of
personal attitudes and insights about their cancer experiences
and life. This project provides an opportunity for youths to
express their individual stories through their photos.
On 28 May 2016, a total of 20 beneficiaries participated in this
workshop. Themed ‘Entrance and Exit’, guest speakers, Ms
Geraldine Kang and Mr Irvin Tan, set the tone for the project
through their generous sharing on how one could tell powerful
storieswith the rightuseofphotography techniquesandmethods.
The participantswere then split into two groups before heading
to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) and National
University Hospital (NUH) respectively to take their photos.
The hospitals were chosen as one of two photography settings
as the venue was an apt metaphoric location to symbolise the
‘entrance’ to life. The young photography enthusiasts were
invited to critically reflect on three moments in their life where
they felt ‘contentment’, ‘disappointment’ and ‘decisiveness’.
Thesemoments became the topics for their shoot.
